The city settled near the halt of the American Revolution. Furthermore, the city was originally called Cannonsburgh.
Murfreesboro was well-established in 1811 through a land tract as a donation of Colonel William Lytle, a Revolutionary War soldier. He named it for his friend, Colonel Hardy Murfree.
The state capital was Murfreesboro from 1818 to 1826. A bitter encounter of the American Civil War took place in the city (December 31, 1862–January 2, 1863). The Union forces under General William S. Rosecrans won a strategic victory over Confederates under General Braxton Bragg. Stones River National Battlefield preserves the site of the engagement.
